Happy Loyalty Day!
In the latest installment of things so far gone that they render parody superfluous, I bring you this US public holiday. Yep, that's right. Loyalty Day, a national holiday intended to counterbalance the large public demonstrations which are, as we all know, mounted annually on May 1st by god-hating commies in most major US metropolises. The text of G. Bush II's proclamation of this holiday in 2003 is particularly bizarre to those of us who grew up in a culture which equates dogmatic jingoism with utter lunacy...

Republicans in the White House are always trying to proclaim days to celebrate their values. To wit, Sanctity of Human Life Day has been often proclaimed by Republican presidents, but not Democratic ones. I'm sure that Democratic presidents have their own proclamations to support their own agenda but I doubt that they are as zany or ironic as the Republican ones.

I was very confused when I looked at my desk calendar this year, and 11 Sept was described as "Patriot Day (US)."

This was jarring on two fronts: I didn't think 9/11 needed to be commemorated as a holiday, and, 18 April is already Patriot's Day ("On the 18th of April in '75...").

In any event, I've never heard of Loyalty Day.
